Jelly Cupboard Makeover

Spring is the time of the year when my neglected front porch finally gets some much needed attention.  In the next week or two, I will be focusing on getting some long overdue porch projects completed.

I purchased this jelly cupboard years ago from Hobby Lobby as an unfinished wood project.  It has been painted multiple colors and stenciled on over the years and has always been kept indoors.  LAST summer I had the brilliant idea of bringing it outside on our porch.  As you can see I started the process of refinishing it, but only got to the primer stage.  This is what it looked like for the past several months and oh yes, it was on our front porch like this.

I used paint I already had on hand from other projects.  I decided to paint each piece a different color.

After the paint dried I sanded it to make it look more rustic.  Then I stained it with a dark walnut stain.  I sprayed the hardware and knob with an oil rubbed bronze spray paint.  I just love this stuff!

You've heard the expression, "put a bird on it"?  Well, here in Texas it is all about stars.  We just have to "put a star on it!"  I found these fun rusty stars at a yard sale for only a dollar!  These stars typically  cost a few dollars just for one.  I wanted a darker look for the stars so I painted them with my good old oil rubbed bronze spray paint. (I told you I loved this stuff!)

So, tell me what you think.  Are you ready to "put a star on it"?

  5. Absolutely love the colors you used. It turned out great! (One question, did you paint on the stain with a brush or rub it in with a rag?) Thanks!
